The thought of root canal therapy can send shivers down the spines of some people. But the fact is that root canals are common procedures that are done in countless dental offices across the U.S. each and every day. These procedures can often save a tooth that might be lost otherwise, and they can often be completed with very little – if any – discomfort on the part of the patient. Dr. Reddy is pleased to provide root canal therapy to her patients at her Hutto, TX, office.
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Dr. Reddy may recommend a root canal if the pulp of a tooth has become infected. Put very simply, root canal therapy involves removing the infected pulp and nerves from the tooth and sealing it off. After the nerves and pulp are removed, Dr. Reddy may decide to affix a crown over the top of the tooth to protect it. Since a tooth doesn’t need nerves or pulp to function, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can be fully functional again after the procedure.
How to Know if You Need Root Canal Therapy
The vast majority of people who need root canal therapy will know something is wrong. One of the most common signs that a root canal is necessary is a severe toothache that gets worse when you apply pressure on the tooth, such as when you bite down and chew food. But there may be other symptoms as well:
- Redness, swelling and/or tenderness of the gums around the affected tooth
- A sore on the gum tissue next to the affected tooth
- Sensitivity to hot or cold food or drinks
- Discoloration (usually darkening) of the tooth
